I know a woman whose children are all married with kids of their own. When she sees one of them struggling with an issue she experienced decades ago, she quietly asks, “Would you like me to tell you what I think?” When they say yes, she shares. When they say no, she says, “OK” and that’s that.
Beautiful technique; Compassion and space giving.
Observation: Those who don’t adopt that approach end up giving far less advice. Or, put another way, those who insist on advising do far less advising; their advice is ignored far more often.
