The Hebrew word for search is drasha, as in Medrash. The path by which halachos are extrapolated from Torah verses is called drasha, which is to say we search for the greater practical meaning in the Torah. One doesn’t search for something he doesn’t know is there to be found. The root of all medrashim and drashos of the last three millennia is that there is something beneath the surface of the Torah worth finding. The next time you hear an unusual idea; if it comes from an authentic Torah source, either book or person or community, then even if it sounds outlandish, fight the urge to be dismissive. Assume that there is wisdom to be found there.
